Fish oil and Omega 3 fatty acids: Researchers in the field of dietary
control of hormonal response are increasingly emphasizing the broad benefits
of omega 3 fatty acids from fish and fish oil supplements. Studies show that
fish oil can help with physical performance, maintaining a healthy
cholesterol level, and improving mental focus. Fish oil is also widely
considered to be important component of heat health because of it's high
omega-3 concentration. New research supports omega 3's as an important
factor in promoting healthy kidneys, immune system, joint movement,
strength, stamina, brain, and heart. Studies show that file oil is even
beneficial in supporting a balanced mood and sense of well being.*
Additional Benefits of Omega 3 Fatty Acids: Researcher Hans R. Larsen,
MSc ChE. states that scientists first learned of the many benefits of fish
oil, E.P.A. and D.H.A. in the early 1970s when doctors from Denmark noticed
that Eskimos living in Greenland had an unusually low incidence of heart
disease and arthritis despite the fact that they consumed a high-fat diet.
Researchers later found that the oil the Eskimos consumed in sizeable
quantities, E.P.A. and D.H.A., were in fact beneficial. The U.S. National
Institutes of Health recommends a daily intake of 650mg of D.H.A. and E.P.A..
Fish oil may be very helpful for depression in some cases. A study in the
Archives of General Psychiatry (published in October 2002) showed the
benefits of taking 1 gram of fish oil daily in patients who had not
responded to antidepressants. *
Omega 3s: Omega-3 fatty acids in fish oil promotes a healthy vascular
system, because it contains EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic
acid). Essential fatty acids are grouped into two families, omega-6 EFAs and
the omega-3 EFAs. Omega-6 fatty acids help promote inflammation, blood
clotting, and tumor growth, while omega-3 acids, found in fishoil and very
few other sources, act entirely opposite. One of the reasons that people in
the industrialized world need more omega-3 fatty acids is that they eat
about 25 times more omega-6 fatty acids than omega-3's. This imbalance in
turn tends to make the body more prone to cancer, heart disease and other
serious problems. A diet high in omega-3 fatty acids can restore the
balance. Omega-3 fatty acids also help prevent blood clots and other fats
from damaging the arterial walls. *
